Training Your Dog

Classes VS. Private Lessons

I believe dog obedience classes are extremely good for both owner and dog! It gives your dog usually much needed experience in how to behave around other dogs. And also teaches you how to handle your dog around other dogs too!

Look for a class that is not overly large. You don't want so many dogs in one room that there isn't enough room to breath!

Make sure your instructor is experienced in both large and small breed training. Behavioral modification and possibly some obedience show experience.

Now for private lessons, yes they are good too, but don't give you the opportunity to work your dog in close proximity of other dogs. Sometimes this can be a good place to start, or if you have a dog that's overly aggressive with other dogs, this may give you some time to get your dog under control before bringing him/her into a larger group for classes.

When Should I Start Training My Dog?

Start your dog young if you can! As soon as they have completed their puppy shots, is the right time to start.  The sooner the better, it's easier to learn good habits than have to break bad habits. But certainly dogs of any age will benefit from obedience training. And so will you!

 Is My Dog Trainable?

At least 99% of dogs are trainable. But you must put in the time! Spending at least 10-20 minutes a day, once or twice a day, is a great start. You don't want to overwork your dog with long grueling training sessions. Your dog will become bored and more apt to misbehave. Make it fun and rewarding! There's nothing wrong with a treat here and there during training, but remember a kind word, a pat and cuddle will go a long way! Praise, praise, praise! The more you praise the happier your dog will be! And a happy dog makes a happy dog owner!
